Illustrations are indispensable in modern brand communication. They make content understandable, appealing – and above all: memorable. But when a company opts for an explainer video, website graphic or campaign, the question quickly arises:

2D or 3D – which style suits us better?

Both options have their strengths. The right choice depends not only on taste, but also on the objective, the target audience and the brand personality. In this article, we show what characterises both styles – and how to find out which one suits your brand better.

What is 2D illustration?

2D means: two-dimensional. Images that exist on a flat surface – like classic drawings or animations in only one perspective. 2D style is often reduced, graphic and easy to understand. Shapes, colours and figures are clearly recognisable and appear friendly and direct.

Advantages of 2D:

  • Quick to grasp: Information can be conveyed directly and concisely.
  • Appealing and accessible: Ideal for topics that need to be explained simply or conveyed emotionally.
  • Versatile: Particularly suitable for infographics, explainer videos, social media posts or websites.
  • Budget-friendly: 2D productions are often more affordable and quicker to implement than 3D.

When 2D is a good fit:

If your brand appears open, approachable, modern or playful – or if you want to convey technical or social content in an easy-to-understand way.

What is 3D illustration?

3D means: three-dimensional. Objects appear spatial, have depth and shadows, often looking more realistic or detailed. 3D graphics can be rotated, zoomed or animated – as in film or games.

Advantages of 3D:

  • Visually impressive: Ideal for products that should be 'experienced' – e.g. technology, architecture, machinery or innovative services.
  • More realism: When precision or high-quality representation is important.
  • Strong impact: 3D graphics attract attention – especially in presentations or on websites.

When 3D is a good fit:

If your brand stands for innovation, quality or high-tech – or if you want to showcase a product or environment in a particularly impressive way.

Which questions help with the decision?

  1. What do I want to show? Complex processes can often be represented more clearly with 2D. Products or spaces can appear more realistic in 3D.
  2. How do I want to come across? 2D often appears playful or accessible, 3D more premium or technical.
  3. Who am I addressing? Younger target audiences often respond well to stylised 2D graphics. Business clients or specialist audiences often expect a clearer, more realistic appearance.
  4. Where will the graphic be used? Social media, e-learning, animated videos? 2D works excellently there. Trade fair film, high-end presentation, product visualisation? 3D can shine here.
  5. What is my budget? 2D is generally quicker and more affordable to implement. 3D requires more time, technology and often higher costs – but also offers more visual depth.

Tip: Sometimes a combination of both is ideal

It doesn't always have to be either/or. Many brands now use a mix of 2D and 3D : For example, a 2D character interacting with a 3D product. Or 3D graphics with 2D text overlays. This mix can be particularly exciting and unique – if well executed.

Conclusion: The style should suit the brand – not the other way around

The best illustration is one that not only beautifully packages your content, but also conveys it understandably and in line with your brand . That's why it's worth considering carefully before making a decision:

  • What do we want to say?
  • Who do we want to reach?
  • And how do we want to appear?

Whether 2D or 3D – the illustration style is not an end in itself, but a tool that makes your brand visible, credible and memorable.

And no matter whether you choose 2D or 3D – in combination with motion design, the chosen style unfolds its full effect. Through targeted animation , movement, rhythm and dramaturgy are created. Content is not just shown, but told. Complex processes can be made tangible, emotions conveyed, and the brand message remains better in memory.

In short: illustration plus animation equals communication with maximum impact.
